Private transfer from the airport to the Bairro Alto Hotel, a nineteenth-century building on Praça Luís de Camões with the whole city downhill from the door. Nothing scheduled: the first evening belongs to the neighbourhood.

Day 2
The city, sitting down
A restored 1930s tram, the whole car to yourselves, up through Alfama and Graça and out to Estrela. It stops where you want it to stop, which the public 28 has never done for anybody. The afternoon is free.
Day 3
Sintra, before the coaches
An early start for Pena while the hill is still in cloud, then Quinta da Regaleira and lunch in the village. Back along the coast through Cascais, with a stop at Guincho where the Atlantic actually behaves like the Atlantic.
Day 4
Évora, and dinner in a working kitchen
An hour and a half east to Évora — the Roman temple, the cathedral roof, the bone chapel — and back to Lisbon for dinner in the development kitchen of a Michelin-starred chef, at the only table in the room.
Day 5
South, to the coast
Out of the city over the Tagus and into the Alentejo. Three nights at the Santiago Hotel in Santiago do Cacém, with the Costa Vicentina on one side and cork country on the other. The afternoon is for the beach at Melides.
Day 6
A day at sea
North to Setúbal for a traditional sailing yacht along the Arrábida — limestone cliffs falling into water the colour of the Mediterranean, a chef aboard, and lunch cooked at anchor in a cove with no road to it.
Day 7
Cork, and a long lunch
Inland to a working cork estate to watch the bark come off a tree that will not be touched again for nine years — Portugal makes half the world's cork and this is where it comes from — then a long lunch under the olives.
Day 8
Departure
A slow morning on the coast and a private transfer to Lisbon airport, an hour and a half north. Late flights can be met with a room held until departure.

Every supplier we contract is contracted by us, so the liability sits with us and not with your agency. And if something goes wrong on the ground, there is a Portuguese company with a registration number answering for it.
